Bengaluru, DHNS: Heavy rains lashed Bagalkot and Belagavi while parts of the state received moderate showers on Friday. Heavy rains coupled with gusty winds pounded Bagalkot taluk for more than an hour bringing down the mercury levels down. The sky was overcast across the district by 4 pm and there were lightning and thunder as well. However, skies opened up by 7 pm.
A play show organised as part of the fair at Kudala Sangama was cancelled due to the rains. There were also reports of disruption in power supply in some parts of the district.
Belagavi received heavy rains accompanied with strong winds, lightning and thunder for over 30 minutes. The city was under the grip of heat waves with the mercury level nearing 40 degrees mark. Rains came as a relief as the showers brought down the temperatures. Southern parts of the city including areas like Angol, Tilakwadi, Shahapur, Vadgaon, Khasbag and main city areas received heavy showers.
Rains coupled with gusty winds, thunder and lightning lashed Vijayapura for about 30 minutes in the noon in Vijayapura. Though several parts of the district have already received rains, there had not been significant rain in Vijayapura town. The town has been reeling under scorching heat and Friday’s brief showers were not of any help in bringing down the temperature.
A 58-year-old shepherd was killed by lightning in Atalatti of Vijayapura district. The deceased has been identified as Siddu Karade. He was grazing his sheep when lightning struck him.
It rained for about half an hour in the twin towns of Gadag and Betageri. Nargund, Ron and Naregal in Gadag district also received drizzle.
Rains continued to lash Kalasa in Chikkamagaluru district for the second consecutive day, bringing relief for the residents from the sweltering heat.
Several parts of Belthangady taluk in Dakshina Kannada district also received rains. It rained for about 45 minutes in Naravi, Cowradi, Kuthloor and surrounding areas towards the noon.
