Bengaluru, DHNS: The committee constituted to look into the issue of questions 'out of syllabus' in the II?PU Maths paper, might have said that no grace marks be given.

However, evaluators claim that they have been giving marks to any student who has attempted these questions “genuinely.”Time and again, questions are being raised about whether grace marks would be given to seven questions that a few students had said were out of syllabus.

Even as the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) continues to maintain that no grace marks is being given, evaluators told Deccan Herald that they have been asked to give marks to the questions if they have been attempted.

“Liberal evaluation” is being done for question numbers 3 (one mark), for 13 (two marks), 16 (two marks), 20 (two marks), 24 (two marks), 33 (three marks), 49 (B) (four marks) and 43 (Five marks), one of the evaluators said. These seven questions sum up to 21 marks in total.

One of the evaluators from Chikkamagaluru said that they had been doing so following instructions from the Deputy Chief Examiners. “They are being given marks only if these have been attempted. We are seeing if the students have written the question number and tried to solve it, to take it into consideration,” he said.

Evaluators from Bengaluru said that they were given oral instructions to do so as these questions might be well within the syllabus, but are not a part of the textbook that the government has prescribed.

“We have also been asked not to speak about it,” said the evaluator.

Meanwhile, Ramegowda, Executive Director, KEA, maintained that no such marks were being given. “The question of grace marks being given does not arise as nothing is out of syllabus,” he said.
