Kannada writer wants indigenous names for State's regions

Published On : 16 Nov 2015

Mysuru, DHNS: Researcher M Chidanandamurthy on Sunday suggested that the Mumbai Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka regions in the State could be referred to by indigenous names.

India should also be called as ‘Bharat’ at the international level as that would be more appropriate, he felt.

The researcher was addressing the gathering at a two-day State-level seminar on ‘Nela, Jala and?Bhashe’ (land, water and language) as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of Nrupathunga Kannada School here. Chidanandamurthy - popularly known as Chi Mu - said, “It will be better to call?Mumbai Karnataka as Belagavi Karnataka or Kittur Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka as Kalyana Karnataka. Otherwise, it will help only the neighbouring states to stake claim over these regions,” Chidanandamurthy felt.

Suggesting that Kannadigas should take a cue from Marathis and Tamilians, Chidanandamurthy said, “Their love for their language should be a model for Kannadigas. Unfortunately, Kannadigas lack the love for their language.”

The writer said that referring to the regions by indigenous names was not a difficult task. People from Mysuru should take a high-level delegation to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, requesting the latter to take steps for referring to these regions by the indigenous names. It is only then that the State’s unity would get a boost, said Chi Mu.
