Bangalore:The State government will release a Rs 1,000 crore for repair and restoration of City roads that were damaged due to heavy rain.

The fund will be a one-time grant under the Chief Minister’s?Nagarothana Project. The City has 13,000 km of road network. From April 2010 to March 2014, the BBMP has spent Rs 1,698 crore on road-related works, according to K?T Nagaraj, superintending engineer, major roads (BBMP). Bangalore District In-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Friday said directions have already been given to the Finance Department for releasing the amount.

“Once the Finance Department?clears the amount, it will come to the Cabinet for clearance. We will then ask the chief secretary-headed high-level committee to pass the amount and ask BBMP?to call for tenders,” he said. Reddy said the government has decided to bypass seeking approval of the BBMP?works committee.

“We are trying to speed up repair works by getting the chief secretary-led committee for approvals and asking BBMP?to call for tenders. We wish to complete the works in the next two months,” said the minister.

Of the Rs 1,000 crore, the government will spend Rs 700 crore on repair and restoration. The remaining Rs 300 crore will be kept as reserve, the minister added.

Preference will be given to roads in areas such as Mahadevpura, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bangalore South, Byatarayanapura and Yelahanka.

According to the minister, the government intends to give each of these constituencies Rs 35-40 crore for repair and asphalting of roads.

“We intend to use the Rs 300 crore as reserve, if not required for road repair, for maintenance of lakes and parks in the City. We are also planning to use part of the reserve amount towards construction of public urinals and toilets,” he said.
