Krishna continues to swell with water from Maharashtra

Bengaluru, DHNS: People in low-lying areas being moved to safer places; villages face threat of flooding. The Hipparagi barrage in Jamakhandi taluk of Bagalkot district continued to receive huge inflow of water on Monday as River Krishna is in spate, following incessant rainfall in Maharashtra.

The inflow was 2.08 lakh cusecs and the outflow was a like quantity. The Kankanawadi-Jamkhandi road is under water due to the floods. Deputy Commissioner P?A?Meghannavar has said that 11 villages in Jamkhandi taluk will be completely submerged and 16 villages will go under water partially if rain continues in the neighbouring state.

People in Kankanawadi and Muttoor villages are being shifted as a precautionary measure. Bagalkot district incharge secretary Gangaram Baderia held a meeting with regard to the precautionary measures to be taken, in the city on Monday.

Discharge of water from reservoirs in Maharashtra and heavy rain for the past couple of days in the catchment areas of River Krishna and its tributaries has led to an increase in the number of roads and bridges going under water in Chikkodi, Raibag and Athani taluks to 14.

Rain receded in the district with sunshine being witnessed. Water inflow from Maharashtra into River Krishna increased to 1.84 lakh cusecs.

Residents from Ingali village in Chikkodi taluk shifted to safer places along with their livestock after officials apprised them of the threat they faced if river water levels rose further. Boats were used to evacuate them.

Despite river Krishna and its tributaries flowing above the danger mark, none of the villages in the basin has been marooned. Showers receding in Maharashtra has come as a solace with river water levels expected to dip in the next couple of days.

Kodagu district experienced drizzle on Monday. The water level in Harangi reservoir stood at 2,857.98 feet. The inflow of water was 4,606 cusecs, while 2,240 cusecs water was released into the river.

On the other hand, there was scanty rainfall in Dakshina Kannada.

In the last 24 hours, the district received 27.8 mm rainfall.

There was moderate rainfall in the Malnad region of Uttara Kannada district, while showers were on the wane in the coastal region. There was copious inflow into the Kadra reservoir of Karwar taluk, following rain in the catchment areas. Excess water is likely to be released and people in the low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer places.

Intermittent rains lashed various parts of Shivamogga district.

Shivamogga, Bhadravathi, Hosanagar, Thirthahalli, Sagar received moderate to heavy rain intermittently. Shikaripur and Sorab received moderate rain. The water level in Linganamakki dam rose to 1,786.35 feet against the maximum level of 1,819 feet. The inflow of water was 21,670 cusecs. Water level in Mani dam rose to 582.12 metres against the maximum level of 594.36 metres. The inflow was 2,784 cusecs.
