Former Chief Minister and JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy warned of a larger crisis looming large if the sugar crisis is not tackled instantly.

Participating in the debate in the Legislative Assembly on sugarcane crisis and death of farmers, he pointed out sugarcane production had touched 600 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 from 400 lakh tonnes in 2013-14.

Disputing the claim that all sugar industries is in crisis, he said mills can get Rs. 4,483 per tonne of cane from by-products alone.

He suggested that the Government release money directly and later recover by selling seized stocks. Mr. Kumaraswamy said the total dues to farmers had crossed Rs. 3,000 crore for 2013-14 and 2014-15. Farmers were expecting more than oral assurances, he added.
