Bidar, (NDTV): The Lingayats in Karnataka on Wednesday passed a resolution seeking a separate religion for themselves outside the fold of Hinduism. The decision assumes significance with the state Assembly polls fast approaching in early 2018, and Lingayats accounting for close to 17% of the state’s population.
All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha passed a resolution to that effect and said it is not part of Hinduism.
There were a few voices of dissent within the Mahasabha, but efforts are being made to take them into confidence and arrive at a consensus.
Seers, subject experts, elected representatives and leaders, who have been speaking for and against the need for a separate religion status, have been invited to debate the issue.
To safeguard the dignity of the community and the Mahasabha, and to ensure there is no further confusion in this, the dissenters are requested to not air their grievances in public.
The Mahasabha also said that it has the support of many religious mutts, associations, and organisations and people's representatives.
