Marathi-speaking councillor elected Belagavi Mayor

Mangaluru (The Hindu): Sarita Viraj Patil is Mayor and Sanjay Mallappa Shinde is Deputy Mayor

Sarita Viraj Patil and Sanjay Mallappa Shinde from the Marathi group were elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Belagavi here on Friday.

They defeated Malgi Jayashree Prakash and Mahantesh Kashinath Kagatikar belonging to the Opposition group formed by Kannada and Urdu speaking councillors.

The posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor were reserved for ‘General-Woman’ and ‘General’ categories, respectively.

Ms. Patil representing ward no.31 and Mr. Shinde representing ward no.21 secured 32 votes each against 25 votes secured by their respective rivals. Of the 58 council members, Bhairgouda Balagouda Patil was barred from casting his vote by the High Court.

Dinesh Nashipudi, another member, who was arrested and remanded in 14-day judicial custody on the charge of kidnapping a girl, on Thursday, was not present. He could not arrive at the election venue on time to the delay in obtaining permission of the court to exercise his voting rights.

Small Scale Industries Minister and district in-charge Satish L. Jarkiholi, Sanjay B. Patil, MLA, Suresh C.Angadi, and Prakash Hukkeri, MPs were conspicuous by their absence. However, Feroz N. Sait, and Sambhaji Patil, MLAs cast their vote.

Regional Commissioner N. Jayaram conducted the election. Corporation commissioner G. Prabhu, outgoing Mayor Kiran Sayanak and Deputy Mayor Meena Rayman Vaaz were present.
