Mangaluru (The Hindu):A female hippopotamus has been added to the attractions at Pilikula Biological Park even as the Central Zoo Authority has extended the park’s licence till 2020.

The hippo was brought from Bannerghatta Biological Park, Bengaluru, on Thursday under an animal exchange programme.

According to H. Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the park, the hippo, Kaveri, is about 10 years old. The lifespan of hippos is between 40 and 50 years.

He said a pair of hippos, a male and a female, would be brought to the park within a week from Bannerghatta. This would mean a total of three hippos at the park. Mr. Bhandary said that Pilikula would exchange a male tiger with a tigress from Bannerghatta soon. Pilikula will also send three barking deer, four palm civet and four golden jackals.

The park director also said they expect to welcome a white tiger from Surat after a few months. An enclosure sponsored by Indian Oil Corporation for an Asiatic lion is getting ready at the park.

Mr. Bhandary said the Central Zoo Authority evaluated the park recently as among the major zoos in the country. Pilikula Biological Park now has about 1,200 animals and birds.
