Monsoon covers south interior, coastal Karnataka

Bengaluru, DHNS: After hitting the Kerala coast on June 8, the Southwest monsoon advanced into coastal and south interior Karnataka on Friday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours in parts of the state and Bengaluru.

According to IMD officials, Kodagu and coastal regions received highest rainfall.
So far, in north interior Karnataka, the Southwest monsoon has advanced only into Gadag. The intensity will pick up in other regions over the next few days, IMD said.

It is gradually advancing into Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and east-central and north-east Bay of Bengal, an official said.

On Friday, there was heavy rainfall in Honnavar in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and south interior Karnataka, including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga and Hassan. Koppal and Belagavi received widespread rain in isolated places.

The weatherman has predicted gusty wind between 45-60 kmph along the coastal regions. Fishermen have been warned to be cautious while venturing into the open sea.

In Bengaluru, IMD predicts showers with cloudy skies and strong winds over the next few days. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 28 and 21 degree Celsius, respectively.

Till 8.30 am on Friday, parts of Bengaluru city received trace rainfall. HAL and Kempegowda International Airport received no rainfall and 2.6 mm, respectively. By 8.30 pm, the city recorded 0.7 mm, while HAL and Yelahanka recorded 2.1 mm and 2.4 mm rainfall, respectively.

With the onset of monsoon, Bengaluru’s garbage woes will only worsen.

Tree crashes on cars
A government vehicle and two private cars were damaged when a tree came crashing down at the parking lot between Vidhana Soudha and Vikasa Soudha on Friday afternoon.?

“It was an old tree, weakened due to gusty winds over the last one week,” a police officer said.
