Sriranagapatna, (DHNS): The 18th century Tipu’s armoury was on Friday successfully moved to its new location to enable the completion of the Mysuru-Bengaluru rail line doubling project.

South Western Railway General Manager A K Gupta said it was a historic moment for the Railways as the monument had been moved away from its original location to be translocated at a radial distance of 100 metres.

The armoury, which was moved in an ‘L’ shape, had completed its longest leg on Thursday and started the final journey of 30 metres on Friday. By evening, it arrived at its new location, completing the journey. Gupta inspected the work being executed by Wolfe House Movers and PLS Engineering near the railway station on Friday.

He said translocating a monument was the first of its kind initiative in Asia.

“Work on doubling the 139-km stretch of the Mysuru-Bengaluru line began eight years ago and it was thrown open last year, barring a 1.7-km stretch on both sides of Srirangapatna station. The project was delayed due to various reasons, including issues related to land acquisition and also the presence of the armoury. Following the approval of the Archeological Survey of India and the state government, the Institution of Engineers started a study on the relocation of the 10X13 metre monument weighing 900 tonnes. Finally, foreign experts were roped in,” he said.

“The actual work on the translocation began six months ago and the physical movement began on March 6. The total cost of the project is Rs 13.6 crore. The armoury has to be separated from the beams and installed at its new location from Saturday. In order to conserve the monument, which is still in a very good condition, a compound would be constructed around it,” he said.

He said the Srirangapatna railway station building would be renovated to give it a new look. “After the translocation, the space available is sufficient to expand the railway station and to add two more tracks. As of now, there is no proposal for any semi-high speed train from Bengaluru to Mysuru,” he said.
