More facilities for PG centre in the offing

Uduoi (The Hindu): Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, inaugurated the first phase building of the Postgraduate Centre at the Dr. G. Shankar Government First Grade Women’s College here on Thursday. He also laid the foundation stone for the second phase building work of the PG Centre here.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Madhwaraj said that the first phase building had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 crore with grants made available by the government, Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), and the University Grants Commission.

Though 10 classrooms were required for the PG Centre, six had been built in the first phase work. In the second phase building to be constructed another six rooms would be built.

With the construction of the first phase building of the PG Centre, the PG classes which were being held at Government Women First Grade Women’s College, would be shifted to the new building. This would release the pressure on the college, which had 2,300 women students.

Since the PG Centre did not have a separate library and halls, importance would be given to their construction on the first floor of the first phase building. “I would urge Higher Education Minister T.B. Jayachandra to sanction grants for this purpose,” Mr. Madhawraj said.

The women students of the college, who had gathered in large numbers for the function, complained to Mr. Madhwaraj about lack of proper drinking water facility in the college.

Mr. Madhwaraj said that he would take up the matter with the authorities of the Udupi municipality.

Jagadish Rao, college principal, welcomed the gathering. Meenakshi Bannanje, President of Udupi City Municipal Council, Sandhya Kumari, Vice-President, Amrita Krishnamurthy and Yashpal Suvarna, councillors, and Prakash Andrade, member of College Development Committee, were present on the occasion.
