Bengaluru, DHNS: Banks in Karnataka will start dispensing new Rs 500 notes on Tuesday. Supplies of the currency are expected in Bengaluru in a few hours, according to State-Level Bankers’ Committee Convenor M Mohan Reddy.

The shortage will ease considerably once the new notes come into circulation, he said on Monday. ATMs in the state are being recalibrated on a war footing to dispense new notes of all denominations, Reddy told reporters after attending a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Technicians are recalibrating 400 ATMs an hour, and banks are working overtime to clear the rush.

Things should return to normal in two or three days. Footfalls at the banks are coming down, he said.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah said he would direct banks to minimise inconvenience to people.

“The Centre should have made proper preparations before demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. People are facing severe hardship,” he told reporters after garlanding a portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru at the Vidhana Soudha.
