Mysuru, DHNS: Department of Posts in Mysuru is receiving Rs 4 crore daily. The Department of Posts in Mysuru, which is exchanging the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, is facing a strange problem.

The department is collecting around Rs 4 crore worth of scrapped notes every day and has no space to store the currency received from people. As per the rules, post offices have to deposit the money collected from the public with banks every day. However, it is said that many banks?are not accepting the old notes from the Department of Posts, citing space constraint at their branches.

Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Mysuru division, Shivaiah, told DH that the department is collecting old currency notes worth Rs 4 crore on an average every day.

Post offices neither have the facility to store the currency nor permission from the government to keep them, he added.

Shivaiah said the staff of his department had no problem in exchanging the notes. But, the challenge is depositing the money with banks and obtaining new currency.

“In addition to their routine duties, our staffers are facilitating exchange of notes. We need support from banking institutions,” he said.

Though there are 64 post offices in Mysuru district, the exchange of currency is being entertained only at a few post offices, due to staff shortage. Only a postmaster works in many post offices and it affects routine works, if the sole officer is assigned with additional work (note exchange process), Shivaiah added.

Separate counters

The authorities have opened separate counters to exchange currency notes at the Main Post Office, Saraswathipuram branch and a few other post offices in the district.

An employee said, “It is inevitable to take up additional work and we are not considering this a burden. Despite heavy workload, we are doing it as it is a temporary process. But, the government needs to take up measures to complete the process as soon as possible and ensure supply of sufficient valid notes to be distributed to people.”

All the post offices in the region have started applying indelible ink on the right index finger of customers who exchange currency.
