MLA Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri who participated in the protest march was also arrested by the police along with Hindu activist leaders.

The police were able to contain the damage and restore peace through lathi charge, tear gas shells and firing in the air.

The unruly mob threw stones indiscriminately. Even media people were hurt in the violence as also the police, who tried to disperse the mob.

Tyres have been set on fire on the highway at many places in the town.
