Pejawar seer urged to ban ‘pankti bheda’

Published On : 17 Jan 2016

Udupi (The Hindu): Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader G.V. Srirama Reddy on Friday urged Pejawar Mutt seer Vishwesha Tirtha Swami to abolish ‘pankti bheda’ (serving food separately for Brahmins) and ‘made snana’ (rolling over the leftover food consumed by Brahmins in temples) in Udupi Sri Krishna Temple and mutts.

Mr. Reddy told presspersons here that intellectuals had been demanding a ban on the evil practices of ‘made snana’ and ‘pankti bheda’ for many years. “Let Vishwesha Tirtha Swami ban such practices, without which there is no meaning for the Paryaya,” he said.

Against glorification

He also said the intellectuals would not oppose Paryaya festival, but wonder about glorifying the event.

Mr. Reddy also questioned the rationale behind Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sending Home Minister G. Parameshwara as the government representative for the event.
