Udupi, (The Hindu): The Republican Party of India (RPI), led by Prakash Ambedkar, will be fielding its candidates in about 40 Assembly seats in the forthcoming Assembly election in the State including Udupi.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, R. Mohan Raj, president, RPI State unit, said Mr. Ambedkar had already released the first list of 10 candidates for the seats. This included its candidate, Shekhar Havanje, for Udupi Assembly Constituency. Mr. Ambedkar would be releasing the second list in Bengaluru on April 11. The RPI was contemplating contesting from Karkala Assembly constituency in Udupi district and Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district. A decision on this would be taken by Mr. Ambedkar.

The RPI had an understanding with parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) and Welfare Party of India (WPI) in the State. Both Mr. Ambedkar and the CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury would campaign for the candidates of this group together, he said.

Mr. Raj said that the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) were not working towards the fructification of the ideals of the Constitution.

The policies of the Modi government such as demonetisation had hit the farmers and daily wager earners hard in the country.

The Modi government’s measure of Goods and Services Tax (GST) had hit small traders. The BJP wanted not just “one country, one tax,” but also homogeneity in all matters without recognising the importance of pluralism and inclusive society, he said.

He demanded to know why the Union government had dragged its feet on seeking a review of the order of the Supreme Court diluting the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. It was this Act, which protected the weaker sections against atrocities and discrimination. This showed that it hardly had any concern for the welfare of the Dalits, he said.

To a query, Mr. Raj said that the aim of the RPI was to bring in social transformation and ensure social justice.

Vishwanath B., K. Abubakar, Shekhar Havanje, G. Damayanti, and Vittal H., leaders of RPI, were present.
