Bangaluru (DHNS): A?day after SSLC results were announced, PU colleges in the city saw a rush of applicants for admissions.

Though Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait had said on Friday that a circular would be issued to colleges instructing them not to have different cut-off percentages for boys and girls, colleges have not received any such instructions so far.

The principal of MES PU College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Malleswaram, Dr L Ramu, said they had not received any communication from the PU department.

“If they issue a circular, we will have to obey it. But we would like to discuss it first,” he said. He said that to ensure an equal number of seats to boys and girls, it was necessary to have different benchmarks since girls have higher scores.

The college has already issued 4,400 applications on the first day. Of these, 2,500 were for the Science stream, 1,800 for Commerce and 100 for Arts. This year, the cut-off percentage for PCMB for girls and boys may be around 97% and 96.68% respectively for the first list, the principal said.

Few takers for Arts

On the first day, KLE PU College in Rajajinagar issued around 1,500 applications with 70% of them for Science and the rest for Commerce, principal Vinay Kumar said.

“We have very few takers for Arts stream with only about 25 applications issued so far,” he said. In the previous years, they used to have different cut-off percentages for boys and girls. “We used to give management seats to girls to compensate this. Since the minister said that they would issue a circular to have equal cut-off percentage, we will follow it this year,” he said.

Many colleges have not yet decided on a cut-off percentage and they will take a call based on the applications they receive.

Director of the department of pre-university education, C Shikha said the minister’s promise had come to their notice and they would be looking into the issue.

BCom: popular choice

Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) remains the popular choice among students who cleared the II PU examinations, the results of which were announced on Thursday.

“There are several employment opportunities in marketing, finance, banking, industrial and service sectors. Students get jobs easily soon after the completion of their graduation.?Hence, BCom is more in demand,” said B?S?Jayashree, principal (in-charge) of Vijaya Degree College, Basavanagudi.

The college has 480 seats for BCom while over 2,000 applications are received every year. Job opportunities in Basic Sciences and Applied Science are coming down, while there are more employment opportunities for BCom graduates. Hence, students want to pursue BCom for jobs, said Deepthi Ashok, placement officer, Community Institute of Management Studies, Jayanagar.
