Mangaluru, (The Hindu): Sea water with swell waves entered more than 10 houses in Uchhil, Someshwara and Ullal areas here on Sunday creating panic among people. The sea was also rough in Kaup near Udupi.

According to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), swell waves are likely to continue in the State’s coastal belt on Monday.

An INCOIS bulletin said on Sunday: “There is a strong indication that high energy swell waves with heights between two metres and three metrs and in periods between 17 seconds and 22 seconds are continued to be experienced in the seas around India. The high waves have been seen along the west coast of India from the afternoon of April 21 and they will continue on April 23.”

An earlier bulletin mentioned that that there was a possibility that sea would be rough near the shore and also, the low-lying areas (Udupi, Murudeshwar and Gokarna) might experience surges intermittently between 5.30 p.m. on April 21 and 11.30 p.m. on April 22 due to the effect of high period swell waves having 1.7 metres to 2.1 metres height. It said that the rough condition of the sea is likely to continue on Monday.

Meanwhile, Fire and Emergency Services personnel took up works to drain out water from the affected houses on Sunday.

K.S. Jayappa, a professor of Marine Geology, Mangalore University, told The Hindu that when two long shore currents converge, rip currents are formed which usually move off shore. In rare cases, waves may push that volume of water onto the shore.
