Bengaluru (The Hindu): There was speculation earlier that the children would get slippers and not shoes because of budgetary constraints.

Children studying in government schools will get a pair of shoes and two pairs of socks by June.

A Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has decided to provide this to 48 lakh schoolchildren studying from classes 1 to 10. It would cost the State exchequer Rs. 120 crore. The school development monitoring committees will be given the responsibility of distributing shoes and socks.

There was speculation earlier that the children would get slippers and not shoes because of budgetary constraints.

According to sources in the government, the cost of each pair of shoes and two pairs of socks for students of classes 1 to 5 costs Rs. 225. It costs Rs. 250 for students of classes 6 to 8, and Rs. 275 for students of classes 9 and 10, respectively.

The State Budget for 2015-16 announced providing shoes and socks to schoolchildren. The Cabinet has decided to provide free bicycles to class 8 students studying in government and aided schools. It would cost the State Rs. 188 crore, sources said.

SIT term extended

It was also decided to extend the term of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for one more year. The term of the SIT will end on January 24, 2016. The SIT was formed under the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokayukta to look into illegal mining in the State.

The Minister said 1.2 acres of gomal land would be given to set up a kitchen at the government school in Anekal for Bosch company. The food prepared at the kitchen would be supplied to schoolchildren.

The issue of regularisation of encroached forestlands (deemed forests) has been deferred to the next Cabinet. The State government has proposed to regularise lands up to three acres that were encroached upon before 1978.

A joint survey was carried out by the Forest and Revenue departments to identify deemed forest areas in the State. Officials have been asked to come out with more details on deemed forestlands since the government has to submit the same to the Supreme Court.

The extent of deemed forestlands would be reduced from 9,94,881.11 hectares to 5,00,611.70 hectares.
