Udupi, (The Hindu): The first Sea Walkway in the State was inaugurated near the picturesque Malpe Beach by Minister for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, Pramod Madhwaraj, here on Friday. With this, another landmark has been added on the Malpe beach, which the tourists cannot afford to miss.

Walking on the Sea Walkway, you feel you are amid the sea. There is water on either side of the Sea Walkway and in the front, is the vast Arabian Sea.

The gentle sea breeze kisses your face. You can see the St. Mary’s Island and the Bhadargad Island from the Sea Walkway Point.

This is the point, where the Sea Walkway ends in the midst of the sea. The view from here is breathtaking.

The Sea Walkway has been constructed beautifully on the breakwater at the entrance of the Malpe Fisheries Harbour.

With slip-proof floor below, the walkway is 450 metres long and 2.4 metres wide.

There are granite seats on either side of the walkway, where people can sit and enjoy the sight of the sea, sea birds and the fish.

From the Sea Walkway, you can see the entire length of the Malpe Beach. You can also watch the beauty of the sea during the evenings. As many as 30 iron cast lamp poles have been fixed on the entire walkway to illuminate it during the evening.

What adds to the beauty of the Sea Walkway is the statue of a fishermen’s family sculpted with cement and sand by the artist, Purshotham Adve. The big statues show a fisherman carrying an oar, a fisherwoman with a basket on her head and their child following them with a bag.

 “The fishermen, facing the west, shows that he is going to catch the fish, while his wife, looking to the east, shows that she is going to the city to sell the fish catch.

 
Their child with a bag is accompanying them en route his school,” Mr. Adve said.

The Sea Walkway is located near the Tourist Jetty in Malpe, where the tourists catch boats to go to the St. Mary’s Island. The Sea Walkway was constructed at a cost of Rs 53.5 lakh in three months.
