Chennai, DHNS: Delta farmers in Tamil Nadu on Thursday demanded that the state government organise a special Assembly session for passing a resolution to prevail upon the Union Government to constitute the Cauvery Management Board immediately.
Recently, the Supreme Court had directed the Unioun Government to set up Cauvery Management Board.
Representatives of farmers belonging to various associations, supported by the Opposition DMK, Congress and the Left parties, held a meeting here and also urged the Tamil Nadu government to arrange a meeting for them with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for explaining the situation in the delta region.
A resolution, which was passed at the meeting, said that since Karnataka had released only 94 tmcft of Cauvery water of the total allocation of 192 tmcft per year to Tamil Nadu, the state government should convene a special legislature session to pass a resolution demanding that the Centre give orders to the neighbouring state for the release of remaining water without any further delay.
The delta farmers asked the NDA-led BJP government at the Centre to act in accordance with the provisions of the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.
