Mangaluru (The HIndu): Sushruth U.K. is hoping to get a present from his mother Surekha. “She wanted me to score 620. I have scored more than that. I hope to get a present,” he says.

Sushruth, a student from St. Mary’s English-Medium School in Laila village, Belthangady, is one of the seven students who have come second in the SSLC exams. With 624 marks, he is the top scorer in Dakshina Kannada district, which has been ranked third in the State in terms of overall performance.

Sushruth is the older of the two children of Surekha and Kishore Kumar. Ms. Surekha is a Kannada teacher at the Government Secondary School, Guruvayankere, while Mr. Kumar is the superintendent at the office of the Bantwal Block Education Officer.

Busy with their jobs, Sushruth’s parents rarely found not enough time to help him prepare him for the examinations. “He understood our constraints and prepared on his own,” says Ms. Surekha. Among the techniques he used was to make a small, handy booklet in which he would note down important points. “Whenever I had time to spare during my school hours, I would go over those points,” he says. He thanked his teachers and his mother’s colleagues for helping him prepare in whatever way they could.

Meanwhile, Ramyashree, a student of Vidyadayini English-Medium School, Surathkal, who has secured 623 marks, says she wants to become a chartered accountant. “My mother wants to see me as a CA. I want to realise her dream,” she says. Her father Ramesh Rao works with Life Insurance Corporation, while her mother works Meera M. works with the National Insurance Corporation.

Ajay K.P. of Canara High School, Dongerkery, says preparing for the National Talent Search Examination helped him ace the SSLC exams. Ajay, who secured 622 marks, was ranked 21st in the State in NTSE.
