Mangaluru (The Hindu): It may last till May 21, if water supply in city is made once in three days As Dakshina Kannada, particularly Mangaluru city, stares at a severe water famine, the administration is making every effort to stretch the limits by which water could be made available in the city and also the rural areas.

As the water-level in the Thumbe Dam on the Netravathi stood at 5.5 ft on Thursday, the administration was told that storage is enough for about six pumping days, at a meeting chaired by District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai here. Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim suggested to Mangaluru City Corporation to pump water once in three days and during the non-pumping days, dredge silt at the weir so that the available water reaches the jack-wells.

Through this, Mr. Ibrahim and corporation engineers concurred, piped water supply could be stretched till May 21. At the same time, many areas in the city are already getting piped water supply only once in three days, that too non-commensurate to the actual requirement even as water is not reaching households located in the hilly areas.

Mr. Ibrahim also suggested to the corporation to secure private open wells as well as borewells to meet the city’s water requirement. If necessary, rent may be paid to the owners of such wells, he said.

Meanwhile, the order banning lifting of water for industrial and agricultural purposes has been extended till May 14, Mr. Ibrahim added.

Corporation Commissioner H.N. Gopalakrishna said that as many as 90 unused open wells have been identified, of which 10 government and 13 private wells have been cleaned. Water in six wells was found potable while water in the others could be used for non-potable purposes. As many as 22 points for sinking borewells have been identified, and six borewells were sunk and pumps were installed, he said.

The corporation has deployed 18 water tankers, six in Surathkal region and 12 in the city to supply water to the needy.

Mayor M. Harinath said that the corporation is procuring about 25 fibre water tanks which can be loaded on pick-up vans to supply water to residents in the hilly areas. Mr. Gopalakrishna said that the water released from the Disha vented dam upstream the Kumaradhara is yet to reach the Thumbe Dam. After releasing dead storage from MRPL’s weir at Shambhoor and AMR Dam, the water-level at Thumbe improved by about 2 inches, he said.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader, MLA J.R. Lobo and MLC Ivan D’ Souza and other officials were present.
