Will consider replacing Nijalingappa's statue, says Siddaramaiah

Published On : 11 Dec 2015

Bengaluru, DHNS Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said that he would consider replacing the statue of former chief minister S Nijalingappa’s statue inside the Vidhana Soudha premises.

After garlanding the statue near the West Gate, Siddaramaiah was petitioned by Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj to change the sculpture as it does not resemble the veteran Congress leader.

“The statue does not resemble Nijalingappa. His trademark was kacche and jubba. The government should rebuild the statue at least by next year,” he said.

Siddaramaiah said that though Nijalingappa would always attire himself traditionally, occasionally he also wore suits. “I will look into it,” he added.

Speaking to reporters, he said that Nijalingappa was an honest politician. He also fought for the unification of the State and worked for the welfare of the farming community, Siddaramaiah said.

“Until his end, he fought against corruption. He was known to directly attack corrupt officials because of his straightforward nature,” he added.

Drought relief

He attacked the Centre for not releasing funds for drought relief works, despite Karnataka petitioning for it in August.

Refuting charges made by BJP leaders like B S Yeddyurappa and K S Eshwarappa about the funds having remained unutilised, Siddaramaiah said, “Not a single penny has been released to Karnataka till date. Will I lie about such a thing? The Centre had agreed to release funds to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore, but the money hasn’t reached us.

“The State government has so far spent around Rs 600 crore to compensate farmers who have been affected by crop loss during heavy rains. But we are yet to compensate farmers affected by drought. The BJP leaders are ill-informed about the state of affairs,” he added.

Meet on Dec 21 to pick Lokayukta

When asked about the appointment of the Lokayukta, Siddaramaiah said that the committee comprising the High Court chief justice, presiding officers of the Legislature, Opposition leaders and himself, would meet on December 21 to select a name.
