Wrestler hurt in bout dies

Hubballi, DHNS: Wrestler Santosh Dyamanna Hosmani (21), injured in the course of a bout, died here on Tuesday.

He had suffered a thigh fracture during a 97 kg Greco-Roman bout against Mohammad Ali of Davanagere on February 8. After initial treatment at the District Hospital and SDM Hospital in Dharwad, he had been admitted to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital here. He underwent surgery on Monday. With fat entering his blood vessels, he suffered a cardiac arrest on Tuesday, doctors said.
Hailing from a poor family, Hosmani was a university blue, and represented Karnatak University, Dharwad. He is survived by his father, mother, two brothers and two sisters.

Relatives and friends, as also people of his native Chikkamalligwad, gathered in large numbers at the hospital on Tuesday. Some alleged negligence by doctors.

Deputy Commissioner S B Bommanahalli said the government would grant Rs 5 lakh as compensation for Hosamani’s family. Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Karjagi said the demand for a job for a member of the family would also be considered.
