Mangaluru (The Hindu): Over 60 cyclists ride from MCC office to the confluence of the Netravathi and the Arabian Sea.

Niranjan Rai, convener, Action Committee Against Netravathi Diversion, on Sunday said the Yettinahole water diversion project would not stop just there; it would entail resumption of Niddodi Thermal Power Project near Moodbidri, which has now been kept under wraps owing to public protest to supply 350 MW power required for pumping waters to the parched districts.

Addressing Mangaluru cyclists at Netravathi’s confluence with the Arabian Sea near Ullal here, Mr. Rai said the projects thus would spell doom on Dakshina Kannada district.

He said unless Niddodi is revived, there is no major source of power nearby while Karnataka is already reeling under power shortage. Niddodi project entails destruction of over 1,200 acres of fertile land as well as forests.

Over 60 cyclists under Mangalore Cycling Club and Mangalore Bicycle Club rode from Mangaluru City Corporation office to the confluence early Sunday morning expressing their solidarity with the anti-Yettinahole movement and pledging their support to conserve nature.

Mr. Rai said no one in the district was against sharing drinking water with others. However, everyone was against destruction of the evergreen forests in the Western Ghats in the name of the project; as well as spending of thousands of crores of rupees of public money on a project which does not actually yield any water to the parched districts. He warned if the forest covers are removed in the name of the project, not only coastal Karnataka, but also the hinterlands would be deprived of the Monsoon rains. Unfortunately, those executing the project appear least bothered about this eventuality, Mr. Rai said.

The hidden agenda behind the project is not to provide drinking water, but to loot public money in the name of the project, Mr. Rai alleged. He also alleged that the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd., which is executing the project, is a failed entity, which is yet to complete the Varahi irrigation project.
