The newly appointed Archbishop of Bangalore Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado will be invested with the Sacred Pallium by the Pope’s representative in India Most Rev. Dr. Giambattista Diquattro at a public function on Wednesday 12th September at 6 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral (near Coles park).

The Sacred Pallium is a liturgical vestment that dates back to the 4th century. By the 11th Century, Archbishops had to seek permission from the Pope to wear it. This developed into an annual celebration where the newly appointed Archbishops from around the world would travel to Rome and given the Pallium from the Roman Pontiff. The Pallium it traditionally connected to the papacy and reinforces the unity of the Bishops. It also symbolizes the Bishop’s role as shepherd with a responsibility for the sick and the weak.

Most. Rev.Dr. Giambattista Diquattro (Apostolic Nuncio in India) will be investing Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado with the Pallium in the presence of the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops and a large congregation of Catholic Priests, Nuns and Laity.
