Opening woes for skipper Virat Kohli ahead of 2nd Test against Sri Lanka

Published On : 18 Aug 2015

New Delhi (zeenews): In-form opener Shikhar Dhawan's injury in the ongoing Sri Lankan tour has caused concern for inexperienced skipper Virat Kohli.

At a time when Shikhar's usual partner at the top, Murali Vijay, is already nursing an injury, due to which the right-handed batsman had to miss the opening Test, Dhawan's news came as a big blow.

In fact, India have lost Dhawan for the remaining two Tests due to hairline fracture in his right hand. And Vijay's status for the rest of the series is not confirmed yet.

The young and less experienced KL Rahul failed to perform in the Galle Test, scoring seven and five runs in the two innings.

India is already 1-0 down in the series and the team management is keen to stick with their five-bowler strategy, due to which the fixing the top-order problems is a challenge for Kohli.

The way the Indian batting-line up had collapsed in the second innings at Galle, especially against the experienced Rangana Herath shows the visitors will have a tough time and that in turn has created more doubts.

Injuries to key players and inconsistency at the top and middle-order are the areas Kohli has to deal with in the rest of the series.
