Switzerland win Davis Cup

Lille (France), Nov 24: Switzerland defeated France 3-1 to win the 2014 Davis Cup final at the indoor clay courts of the Stade Pierre Mauroy here Sunday. It is Switzerland's first title at the prestigious event and they become only the 14th champion nation in the 115-year-old competition.

Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer became the most successful Swiss player in Davis Cup history, recording his 50th singles or doubles victory over Richard Gasquet to seal Switzerland's triumph.

The visitors were leading the home nation 2-1 going into Sunday's reverse singles matches.

Sunday's play set a new record for number of spectators at an officially-sanctioned tennis match with a crowd of 27,448, surpassing the 27,432 spectators, who attended Friday.

Davis Cup is the world cup of tennis. It is the largest annual international team competition in the sport with 122 nations taking part in 2014. The competition was founded in 1900.
