Mangaluru (TOI): An 11-year-old girl, studying in fifth standard of B A School in Thumbay hanged herself using a veil at her house in Kumdel of Pudu village in Bantwal taluk.

Police identified the victim as Pooja Shree, daughter of Prasad, who owns a small jewel works at Kadegoli near Thumbay junction. The incident that took place around 3.30pm came to light when her mother went to wake her up from her afternoon siesta, only to find the room locked.

Bantwal Rural Police Station PSI said Pooja Shree had come home with her elder brother as they both went to the same school. After returning, she had gone to her room and slept. The girl had had a class test and had returned home early. The girl's mother had gone in her room to check on her at around 3pm. However, when she found her asleep, she returned to her normal chores. After some time, when there was no activity from the girl's room, her mother became suspicious and knocked on her room.

Finding the door locked, she panicked and broke open the door only to find her daughter hanging from the ceiling. Police said the girl had hanged herself using a nylon veil which she had in turn tied to another rope strung across two windows in the room used to dry clothes. Police said the veil tragically carried the weight of the tiny frame of the girl. A case on unnatural death report has been registered in Bantwal rural police station on a complaint from Prasad.

Incidentally, the family had performed a pooja at their house on Sunday to ward off bad omens which they felt were present in the house after a tenant who lived in the first floor of their house ended her life a couple of months earlier. The tenant, an elderly woman, who suffered from serious health issues, had committed suicide. Police suspect that the girl who could have seen this unfortunate incident might have been affected by it in taking this extreme step.
