‘BJP MPs should file affidavit’

Published On : 06 Dec 2015

Mangaluru (The Hindu): Senior Congress Leader B. Janardhan Poojary has asked BJP MPs from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi to file affidavits before the Chennai bench of the National Green Tribunal against the Yettinahole Diversion Project.

“Our (Congress) MLAs will not do it. I want the two MPs to file their affidavit expressing their opposition for the project. As representatives of the two districts their affidavits would have weightage,” he said. Mr. Poojary questioned the two BJP MPs for not taking the issue with the Prime Minister.

Mr. Poojary said despite knowing the harm to eco-sensitive Western Ghats and the Netravathi, the State government was still going ahead with the project.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called meeting of opposition party leaders and has taken them into confidence to go ahead with the work.

“Opposition leader (in Legislative Council) K.S. Eswarwappa has supported the project. Do you think people are not seeing this drama? The ruling and opposition party will learn lesson in the ensuing elections,” he said. Attacking the State government for going ahead with the Yettinahole Project, Mr. Poojary said that sidelining environmental impact would lead to natural disasters in the costal and other regions of Karnataka similar to the floods in Chennai.

“Is unfortunate that the government was turning its eye away from the likely natural disaster,” he said.

The Chief Minister has ignored advice of party president Sonia Gandhi and was going ahead with the project. While criticising the Tamil Nadu government for declining assistance offered by Karnataka for flood relief, Mr. Poojary said that the offer of Rs. 5 crore made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was too less. The State government should have offered to pay Rs. 25 crore, he added.
