Mangaluru (TOI): Officials of Childline 1098, Mangaluru and District child protection unit rescued two girls — aged 4 and 12-years respectively when they were found begging with a monkey in tow at Kankanady, Bendorewell circle on Wednesday. The girls had migrated with their mother from Nagpur in Maharashtra and were eking out a living for the past several days by getting the monkey with them to perform along the roadside and collecting money given by passersby.

Sampath Katii, Childline 1098 centre coordinator said the girls and their mother were spending nights by seeking refuge in passenger shelters at bus stops in various places across the city. With their father having abandoned them, the girls and their mother came to the city and were forced to beg. The mother told childline authorities that she could not send the children to schools because of poverty. They were produced before the CWC who provided them temporary shelter.

In another incident, the above authorities also rescued a woman with an eight-year old girl who was found begging with a year-old infant in her hands near Sri Maha Ganapathy Temple at Urwa Stores. Woman and these children often used to end up near temples and other places where people congregated during festivals and other occasions and ended up begging, Sampath said, adding they were counselled not to indulge in such practices and sent back to their home at Karnad.
