City kids win State Under-7 boys, girls chess tourney

Mangaluru: Talents Sarthak Anand Devadiga of Udupi and Shriyana S Mallya of Mangaluru have won the Karnataka State under-7 boys and girls chess championship held in Bengaluru between April 2 and 4. They were mentored by Derik’s Chess School.

The championship was organised by Bangalore Rural District Chess Association under the auspices of United Karnataka Chess Association.

Sarthak Devadiga scored 8 points in 9 rounds to emerge the sole leader in boy’s category. He had to start with an initial seeding of No 73 and had lost in the third game but later won five games in a row to achieve this feat. He is a student of Vidyodaya Public School, Udupi and is the second son of Anand Devadiga and Sarita Anand Devadiga.

In the girls category, top-seeded Shriyana Mallya scored an unbeaten 8 points in 8 rounds to claim the title. She had earlier won the national and state titles in the under-7 girls school championships. Shriyana will be representing India in the forthcoming World and Asian School chess championships to be held at Romania and China respectively. Shriyana Mallya is studying in Lourdes Central School, Mangaluru and is the daughter of Sandeep and Nandini S Mallya.

Sarthak and Shriyana have qualified to represent Karnataka in the national under-7 chess championship to be held in Andhra Pradesh during September.
