Mangaluru (TOI): The year-long renovation exercise of the five-decade old Mangalore Town Hall, which hosted scores of political, social and cultural events in the past 50 years, has been completed.

The renovated Town Hall will be jointly inaugurated by DK and Udupi District in charge ministers B Ramanath Rai and Vinay Kumar Sorake respectively on November 14 at 11am.

Mayor Jacintha Alfred said the Town Hall has been renovated at a cost of Rs 4.58 crore.

The hall was closed on September 15 last year and the reopening was scheduled for December when the Town Hall celebrated its Golden Jubilee. But that was not to be.

The renovated town hall, in addition to replacement of damaged seats, defunct electrical equipment and leaking ceiling, the city corporation has made it fully air conditioned.

The Town Hall was inaugurated on December 29, 1964 and thereafter has been a prominent platform for all major social, political and cultural events in the city. In 2013-14, the hall witnessed 317 programmes and thereby the city corporation earned revenue to the tune of Rs 12.36 lakh. In 1997, the hall was renovated, but the current plight is deplorable as it has not been maintained properly thereafter.
