Discontent in Congress over partymen contesting against official candidate

Published On : 29 Dec 2015

Mangaluru (The Hindu): Congress activists have expressed displeasure over party leaders contesting against the official candidate in the Legislative Council elections.

At a programme to mark the foundation day of the party here on Monday, All-India Congress Committee member P.V. Mohan said that it was disturbing to hear that some party men had voted against the party candidate during the Legislative Council elections from the local bodies constituency on Sunday. “If this is true, then it is unfortunate and disturbing,” Mr. Mohan said. He said that voting against the official candidate was akin to acting against the will of one’s parents. Such developments would not auger well for the party that had stood by democratic values and solidarity of the nation. Party leaders should discuss such issues with party activists and resolve it.

Backing the party’s decision to field Pratapchandra Shetty, Ivan D’Souza, MLC, said this was done in the interest of the party.

He said the party had been giving enough opportunity to young leaders.

Ibrahim Kodijal, in-charge president of the Dakshina Kannada district Congress committee, was present. Forest and Environment Minister B. Ramanath Rai and Health Minister U.T. Khader could not attend the function as they left to Bengaluru for the Cabinet meeting in the afternoon.
