Udupi: Addressing a meeting of the Gems & Jewelry Promotion Council (GJEPC) in the national capital, Union Minister for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman spoke of the above proposal which would be covered under the “Design in India” vision of the government.

With an aim to enhance the product quality of Indian jewelry and expand its scope in the domestic and international market, the Union government has decided to set up a Gold Crafts and Design Institute at Udupi.

The minister stated that the institution would be promoted by GJEPC and would train students in advanced design and crafts in the respective sector. Apart from that, the institute will also train freelance artisans employed in the gem and jewelry sector.

Meanwhile, the GJEPC is holding talks with the Udupi Jewelers’ Association and also discussing other matters. The Minister added that the GJEPC was already running several such institutions in other parts of the country.
