Mangaluru (TNN): Mangalore University is all set to hard sell its potential areas of excellence to academic fraternity across India. The 35-year-old university has chosen the department of chemical sciences, which is currently ranked the second best department across all portals of higher education institutions in India in terms of research publications and department of radiation physics, where it is ranked number one in the country, vice-chancellor K Byrappa said on Saturday.

Chairing a programme to launch WiFi facility on its Mangalagangothri campus, Byrappa said the university is striving for accreditation from the Vienna based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chiefly for its radio ecology laboratory along with microtron centre. Stating that university has applied for the same, and is expecting IAEAs response in the next two months, VC said this in turn will facilitate the international body to send people to train in this facility.

Noting that accreditation will enhance stature of university's facility among the researcher's body and other research institutions across the world, Byrappa said it will also enable university to earn precious foreign exchange for the country. Department of Atomic Energy has recognized the microtron centre as centre for excellence in radiation physics and radiological sciences. The Radio Ecology laboratory functions under University Science Instrumentation Centre.

Seeking to tap in to the university's inherent strength in its department of human consciousness and yogic sciences, the university will start diploma and certificate courses as morning classes in its constituent college - University College from next academic year. "University will sign memorandum of understanding with European and American universities to attract at least 30 overseas students to train them in vital areas of yogic sciences and yoga therapy," VC said.
