Manipal University preparing stress-free corporates the yoga way

Manipal (TOI): To prepare stress free corporates, The School of Management(SOM), Manipal University will introduce 'Management of stress and emotions, yoga, and meditation' as a full course general elective for the MBA students.

This course would be a combination of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. The content would include topics such as Emotional Intelligence, self-awareness, emotional literacy, yoga and meditation.

The practical sessions would be conducted by the experienced team from the Department of Yoga, KMC, Manipal, said Raveendranath Nayak, Director, School of Management.

Explaining behind need to include Yoga, a much debated in recent times in curriculum, Raveendranath said, "A good manager is required to be aware of his/her own emotions, identify the emotions in other individuals and manage these emotional cues and information. In today's competitive world there is also a need to cope up with stress and to manage it. Stress can also be used for motivating others."

MBA is not only a post graduate degree but as the holistic development of the person, and our institution made an attempt to do it with the introduction of this course, he added.

This is the first time a full course on this subject has been introduced for the MBA students in the coastal districts of Karnataka.

"Stress is multidimensional and Yoga can offer a solution to this multidimensional challenge as it works at in all levels," said Ashish Viswanath Prakash, Assistant Professor at SOM.

He said that the course will be offered from next academic year in any one of the term. MBA duration is two year and has six terms. SOM has around 300 students studying in MBA in Marketing, HR, Finance & Operations and Healthcare Management.

Course will include theory and practical classes will be conducted by expert yoga gurus. "The aim to prepare students ready to face corporate stress well in advance and once they are into profession it will come handy for them," said Ashish.
