Police foil vigilante attack on Bengaluru students

Mangaluru (TNN): Police on Thursday night foiled a vigilante group's attempt to raid a homestay where Bengaluru students were partying.

Police said 16 engineering students — 11 boys and five girls — had rented out the homestay in Maroli under Mangaluru Rural police station limits for March 25 and 26. They reportedly received a call from activists, said to be from Bajrang Dal, threatening to intervene if police didn't stop the noisy partying at the homestay.

Police sources said neighbours saw the youths allegedly dancing on the homestay's open terrace and alerted the activists.

Police went to the homestay and took the boys to the station around 2am on Friday. They questioned them for an hour before letting them off. In the morning, they asked the girls to the station accompanied by family elders and extracted a bond of good behaviour from them.

After the incident, the group left for Bengaluru on Friday.

A senior officer was miffed with the police action and wondered how did his personnel detain the youths and not the activists. The officer said he would look into the issue.

The owners of the homestay are likely to face a case, source said. An elderly couple stays in the ground floor of the premises.
