Theater play contest from today, Nov 23 at Udupi

Udupi: Ranghabhoomi, Udupi, will organise a 12-day theatre play competition startingon Wednesday at Ravindra Mantap at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College as part of its golden jubilee celebrations. Speaking to mediapersons on Nov 22, Tuesday, Ranghabhoomi joint sectary Raviraj H P said the 12 plays, selected among 48 entries, would be enacted each evening.

The competition is also being held in memory of Dr T M A Pai, S L Narayan Bhat and Malpe Madhwaraj. The best play would receive Rs 25,000 in cash and a citation. The first runner-up will receive Rs 15,000 in cash and a citation, while the second runner-up would get Rs 10,000 and a citation. Besides, each participating team will receive up to Rs 10,000 as travel allowance and Rs 5,000 as honorarium.

Four theatre troupes from Bengaluru, two each from Udupi and Shivamogga and one each team from Mysuru, Hassan, Tumakuru and Dakshina Kannada are taking part in the competition, Raviraj said. There are also prizes for best actor and actresses, best play, best direction, best light synchronisation, best humour, best costumes, etc.

The valedictory ceremony of the golden jubilee celebrations will be held at the finish, at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College. Veteran theatre artiste and director Jeevanram Sulia would be the chief guest. The total budget for the competition is around Rs 4 lakh.

Among the plays, five social, three historical, three mythological and one folk-based. The plays are: ’Samsaradalli Sanidapa’, ’Jathegiruvanu Chandira’, ’Kambalapalli’, ’Mauni’, ’Siri’, ’Smashana Kurukshethram’, ’Aadhe Adhure’, ’Aralida Gajalugalu, ’Agni Mathu Male; ’Surayasthadinda Suryodayadavarege’, ’Mudra Rakshasa’ and ’Ashadada Ondu Dina’. A good participation is expected.
