Mangaluru (The Hindu): Rashida Banu, who was elected to the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat from the Konaje constituency, agrees that the political science theories she studied at Mangalore University while doing her postgraduate course are different from the practical experiences in politics. But this lecturer of political science intends to bring a difference in the working of the zilla panchayat and carry out development works in her constituency.

Ms. Banu, the eldest daughter of two-time taluk panchayat member Mohammed Mustafa from the Congress, has been working as lecturer at the Syed Madani Women’s College in Ullal. Earlier, she worked as a lecturer in Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College, a constituent college of Mangalore University at Madikeri, for two years.

“I know there is a lot of difference between what I have learnt and what I will be practicing now,” Ms. Banu said. She intends to work with legislators, and taluk panchayat and gram panchayat members to carry out development works. “It is through development alone that harmony can be built in my constituency,” she said. With the support of his father and her husband Mohammed Thaha, an engineer in the M Far Constructions, it will not be difficult to discharge responsibilities as a home maker as well as a panchayat member.

The margin of 4,450 by which Ms. Banu defeated Bharatiya Janata Party’s Poornima Shetty is the second highest in Dakshina Kannada. She secured 10,996 votes against 6,516 votes secured by Ms. Shetty.

The highest margin was 4,491 votes by which Harish Kanjipili of the BJP (10,419 votes) defeated Madhava Gowda Kamadhenu of Congress (5,928) in Aranthodu constituency in Sullia taluk. B. Padmashekhar Jain of the Congress (12,810) won against Pramod Kumar Rai Kadabettu of the BJP (8,458) by a margin of 4,352 votes. The former zilla panchayat president Asha Thimmappa Gowda (10,722) of the BJP defeated Vimala Rangayya of Congress (6,712) by a margin of 4,010 votes.
