UP youth ends life in police lock up at Manipal

Udupi (TOI): A youth from Uttar Pradesh arrested in connection with harassment death of his teenaged wife ended his life by allegedly hanging himself in the lock up of Manipal police station late on Wednesday. Police identified victim as Gayaprasad, 20, resident of Banda district in UP, who was arrested following a complaint from Shivamangal, his brother-in-law that the former was harassing his sister Roshni, 18. The duo married recently and had settled at parkala near Manipal.

Santosh Kumar, additional superintendent of police said Gayaprasad was working for a scrap dealer Abubakkar. Roshni, unable to tolerate his constant physical abuse had allegedly committed suicide at their residence. Since the couple was newly married, the executive magistrate carried out an inquest and Shivamangal informed the magistrate that it was Gayaprasad's inhuman treatment of his sister in an inebriated condition that forced Roshni to end her life.

Based on this, police arrested Gayaprasad when he appeared before the police in the presence of his employer Abubakkar. The accused who was kept in the lock up was provided a blanket for the night, Santosh Kumar said, adding that Gayaprasad used the same to hang himself to the bars of the ventilator of the lockup around 11.45pm.

Although police personnel in the station immediately shifted him to KMC Hospital, he was declared brought dead, Santosh Kumar added.

The judicial magistrate Sunitha carried out an inquest as per NHRC guidelines since the accused was in police custody, the police official said, adding the parents of the deceased have been informed about the incident. They are likely to come in a day or two to collect his body, he said. Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Amrit Paul who visited the police station and took stock of the situation assured that a fair investigation will be carried out in to the incident.
