Udupi: Taxicabs, maxi cabs to not ply on Nov. 24

Published On : 19 Nov 2015

The Udupi District Taximen’s Association will shut down the operations of all taxicabs and maxi cabs in the district and stage dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on November 24 to protest against the government’s directive to install speed governors and illegal ferrying of passengers by private vehicles.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, K. Raghupati Bhat, president of the association and former MLA, said that the 46-year-old association had about 2,800 members. However the operations of taxicabs and maxi cabs in the district were hit hard by the operation of about 600 private vehicles which were illegally ferrying passengers. Many taxicab owners had taken loans to purchase vehicles and their business was affected. Private vehicles ferrying passengers was a violation of rules. If the private vehicles ferrying passengers met with an accident, they (passengers) did not get insurance from the insurance companies. Though the matter of illegal operation of private vehicles with numbers was submitted to the Regional Transport Office, the latter brushed it aside stating that it did not have personnel to check them.
