Mangaluru (TOI): Roveena (named changed), an MBA graduate after working in several firms in India for a meager salary, she found greener pasture in Israel, to work as a 'caretaker' for an elderly.

It's not the story of Roveena alone, many of the young graduates and postgraduates both boys and girls from coastal belts are landing in Israel for a better salary by paying hefty commission, ranging anywhere between Rs 7 and 9 lakhs. "After my studies I worked for few years in Bengaluru but surviving in a metro was getting really difficult. With not much qualification my sisters were earning around $1,000(INR 66,000) a month, hence, I too gave it a try and landed here to work as a nurse," she adds explaining what made her decide to become a caretaker even after having a masters degree.

Sujay Pinto who did a nursing course too, had no option other than coming to Israel. "There was no option left for me, with several years of experience in nursing job in India, I was paid poorly but here I draw a fat salary," he added that thousands of youngsters from Mangaluru, Udupi and Kerala work here. "I have met even engineering graduates and people who have failed in their business coming here to work".

Speaking about the nursing industry in Israel, he said the country has jobs all around. They stay with elderly people taking care of their daily needs. Several nurses live at their employer's house, while others work from morning to evening and go back.

After major selection process is over, candidates are given basic training in nursing, basic Hebrew language and a test is conducted. "We will have to pay a huge amount to commission agents which is the only set back in coming to Israel and most of them take loans or borrow to pay for it," added Sujay.

45-year-old Lethisha D'Souza, who has been working for nearly four years, mentioned that the fee to enter Israel has seen a two-fold increase. She paid around Rs 3.5 lakh and for male candidate it was somewhere around Rs 5.5 lakh.
