Mangaluru (TOI): One person, belonging to a Hindutva outfit, was killed and another sustained grievous injuries in an attack allegedly carried out by the members of the same outfit at Maroli here in the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Pratap Poojari, 26, and injured as Manikanta. They were attacked by a gang of 10 goons with machetes at Niddel around 1 am. While Pratap died on the spot itself, Manikanta, who escaped the attack with injuries on his hand, has been hospitalised.
Police said an earlier altercation between the deceased, an activist of Hindu Jagaran Vedike and the assailants, two days back, led to this brutal attack. On Saturday night, the victims had been to the house of a person identified as Achhu to celebrate his birthday. On getting the news, Vinesh, Nishu, Acchu and others waited outside to attack the duo. The attack was so severe that Pratap died on the spot due to serious injuries on his head.
Manikantha, who somehow escaped the brutal attack with some injuries while the attackers targeted Pratap, hid behind a house till the assailants left after a futile search. In fact, on Saturday morning, there was an altercation between Manikantha and the accused while he was doing some masonry work.
Since the inmates of the house, where Manikantha was working, interfered, the attackers left. Pratap, who was working in Mysuru, had come to the city a few days back.
No arrests have been made in this regard so far. However, police said they have got some vital clues from eye witnesses and they will soon nab the assailants.
A case has been registered in Mangaluru Town police station.
