Udupi: Pope Francis decided to up-grade the St Lawrence Shrine, Attur in Karkala as minor Basilica in April itself. A press- meet was arranged at Bishop’s office to give an explanation regarding the official proclamation of the title ‘minor basilica’ to St. Lawrence church and the dedication ceremony which will be held on 1st August.

“This will become a rare holy event of history. By having the recognition as “Basilica”, the divinity and significance of this church will boost and devotees will receive more grace from the Almighty. The devotees have been asked to participate in this proclamation and dedication ceremony in a large scale and to receive the blessings of lord and St. Lawrence”-said Most Rev. Bishop Dr.Gerald Isaac Lobo.

He said - Four cardinals, over 30 bishops, more than 300 priests and thousands of devotees from all over India will witness this unique and historical event.

Public Relation Officer of Udupi Diocese Rev. Fr. Denis D’sa delivered the introductory speech and welcomed all. Monsinger Rev. Fr. Baptist Menezes answered the questions from the journalists. The co-oordinator of the historical event Rev. Fr. Lawrence D’souza said-“Attur is a divine place of every religion; let all of us make this Basilica declaration programme a grand success”. He proposed the vote of thanks. The Rector Parish priest of Attur - Rev Fr.George D’souza and Michel Rodrigues-the coordinator of Christian journalists were present at the dais.

St. Lawrence was put to death on August 10, on the eve of his martyrdom a Novena will be started at 9.30 and the religious programmes of joyful declaration celbration will be started at 10.00 on 1st of August 2016.

Later a stage function will be held. The political leaders and VIP’s will particiate in this great event. At noon, a vegetarian meal will be served to all devotees.
