Mangaluru: In a bid to inculcate the habit of ensuring a clean environment, Barakah International School along with city based NGO, APD (Anti-Pollution Drive) initiated a four day cleanliness campaign. Around 200 students grouped themselves into eight groups of boys and girls and collected plastic waste scattered in and around the campus.

In a span of four days, the school had organized various competitions and activities for imbibing awareness on a clean environment. The students were awarded prizes for the highest amount of plastic junk collected. As a result the students put up an impressive performance by collecting an aggregate of 205 kilos of dry waste. The students also took part in a mini ‘Cleanliness Walkathon’ to spread the message on keeping the surroundings clean. 95 students and 11 teachers participated in the walkathon from the school to Sahyadri Engineering College and back covering a distance of two kilometres.

As part of this initiative taken by Barakah School, Anti-Pollution Drive took up the responsibility of collecting plastic waste mustered by the students in their competition to help recycle the plastic.

Members of APD visited the school campus on September 26 to create awareness in the children on plastic waste management. Students of the school shared their experience about the cleanliness drive with the APD team. This was followed by a briefing on wet and dry waste segregation by the Swaccha Mangaluru project head of APD, Naveen D’Souza. The winners were awarded trophies in the plastic bottle collection competition organized by the school.
