CIRHS organised a two-day workshop for the students of SDM PU College

Published On : 15 Aug 2018   |  Reported By : media release

CIRHS, the research centre at SDM PG College, organised a two-day workshop (11-12 August 2018) for the students of SDM PU College (Ujire), titled "Introduction to Europe, its Institutions and Culture". The workshop introduced the young participants to European culture. The workshop was an attempt to make the knowledge of another culture, the European culture, relevant to Indian students.

The workshop sessions were built around the following questions: Why should Indians study European culture (or any other non-Indian cultures, for that matter)? Why should we know anything about, say, the European Union at all?

The resource persons of the workshop -- Dr. Sufiya Pathan, Ms. Anne Cardinael and Dr. Dunkin Jalki -- said that there are two reasons for us Indians to know Europe. (a) Today, in the current circumstances, knowledge about another culture is going to play a very important role in fostering peaceful living in the world. (b) As Indians, we have an additional reason as well. India and Europe share a past that has its impact on their present and their future. For us Indians, therefore, if we have to know India, we have to first know Europe.
