Karkala: Two leopards and an elephant were found dead near human habitations in Karkala. The leopards are believed to have died of starvation, while the elephant died due to asphyxiation and trauma.

A video of a dying leopard, two to three months old, has gone viral. The leopard apparently suffered giddiness because of starvation and it was found dead near a field in Bailooru.

An autopsy revealed grass in the leopard’s stomach and no food as such. The other leopard, aged around a year, according to the RFO, also died due to starvation. Its carcass was found on government land in Erlappadi.

The strong and healthy male elephant, around five years, died after it fell into a 3-4ft deep pit, with its trunk pressed against the inner wall of the pit. The incident took place at a field in Neere. The pit had been dug for agricultural purposes.
